Distinguished and Famous people from The Clare Valley

🌟 Jim and Nancy Barry

Jim and Nancy Barry built a family wine enterprise from property bought near Clare in 1959. Further land purchases, including the Armagh vineyard site, expanded their work, and a new winery produced its first wines in 1974. Jim brought experience from the Clarevale Co-operative and work at Taylors, while Nancy was a driving force in the family business. Their contribution belongs to the valley's twentieth-century development, alongside the much older vineyards and wineries that had already established its winemaking traditions.

📚 C. J. Dennis

Auburn-born C. J. Dennis became one of Australia's most popular writers of colloquial verse. After childhood moves and schooling that included Sevenhill, he worked in newspapers before developing the poems associated with The Sentimental Bloke. His writing found comedy, affection and rhythm in everyday speech. The valley's place in the biography is an early one: birth at Auburn in 1876 and part of his education nearby, before the later Victorian years in which much of his best-known work developed.

⚖️ John Jefferson Bray

John Jefferson Bray attended Sevenhill Public School in the Clare Valley after his father took up an orchard there. He studied law at the University of Adelaide but maintained a deep interest in classics and literature. His career eventually included eleven years as chief justice and regular appearances at Writers’ Week. He preferred conversation with literary friends to a conventional legal social life, and continued publishing poems, essays and translations. His judgments were admired for clear language and historical reasoning. The same appetite for reading served both the poet and the judge.
